Chocolate Cake For Breakfast
Friday’s dessert has Saturday plans.
Of all the things we might borrow from Practical Magic, chocolate cake for breakfast is the most delicious. We’ll need a cake, a fresh pot of coffee and somewhere comfortable to spend the first half-hour of Saturday.
The cake we’ve bookmarked
Our pick is Sue Moran’s adaptation of Ina Garten’s chocolate cake on The View from Great Island. Hot coffee goes into the cocoa-based batter; Sue adds sour cream to the chocolate frosting. It’s a proper two-layer cake, with plenty to share and a good reason to keep a slice back.
Live the film
Bake ahead of Friday’s rewatch, allowing time for the layers to cool completely before frosting. A cake stand and a stack of small plates will do nicely if friends are coming. Set aside the breakfast portion before anyone starts offering to take seconds.
Come morning, put the coffee on and bring out a favorite cup. We’re giving yesterday’s cake the good china.
Surprise overnight guests with a slice of cake while they are expecting toast. For an evening spent alone, we have breakfast to look forward to.
