Practical Magic, Supper Included

October 23, 2026•3 min read

Something warm for dinner, chocolate cake for later, and a margarita whenever we please.

For our Practical Magic rewatch, we’re having the sort of supper that allows for a second helping without getting up for very long. A sandwich cut in halves. Cake already sliced. The evening belongs equally to a roomful of friends or one woman with possession of the remote.

First, something savory

Our choice is a sharp cheddar and apple toastie: sourdough, a little Dijon, thin slices of tart apple and enough cheddar to reach the edges. Butter the outside and cook in a skillet over medium-low heat until both sides are golden and the cheese has melted.

Put a few cornichons on the plate. Bring a proper napkin. It’s dinner, even if we’re eating it on the sofa.

Chocolate cake tonight and for breakfast.

The Owens household has a breakfast policy we’re happy to adopt.

Serve dark chocolate cake with a spoonful of crème fraîche tonight, then save a slice for the morning. We like it straight from the cake tin with strong coffee, preferably while still in our pajamas.

If friends are coming, wrap a slice so they can have breakfast chocolate cake as well. Buy it from a good bakery or make it ahead; either way, have it ready before pressing play.

About those margaritas

We’re keeping ours classic: tequila, fresh lime and orange liqueur, with salt along half the rim. Make one before the film, while the sandwich is cooking.

For an alcohol-free glass, stir fresh lime and orange juice with a little agave, top with sparkling water and use the same salted rim. Taste before adding more sweetness.

Settle in

Choose the seat with the best view of the screen. Leave a lamp on beside it, put the phone out of reach and bring everything over on a tray.
