Practical Magic Is Having a Moment Again
Practical Magic Is Having a Moment Again
Nearly three decades later, the Owens women are back—and we’re returning to the house, the kitchen, and the greenhouse that made us want to live there in the first place.
With Practical Magic 2 bringing us back to the Owens women, we couldn’t resist another look at the 1998 original. Sally’s daughters are grown, another generation has entered the frame, and yet the original still feels remarkably current. Not because of the plot, but because of the world Sally and Gillian inhabit—and how clearly that world defines them.
Sally is grounded, practical, domestic in the best sense of the word. Gillian is freer, more impulsive, more glamorous.
HOME
The Kitchen We Still Want
The Owens kitchen has become more appealing with time.
Copper pots hang overhead. Open shelves hold bowls, baskets, herbs, glass jars, and cookware—visible because someone actually uses them. After years of immaculate white kitchens and appliance garages, it’s refreshing to see a kitchen with evidence of life in it.
Then there’s the greenhouse.
Attached just off the kitchen and filled with herbs and plants, it may be the most enviable room in the house. Imagine opening the door in the middle of an East Coast winter and clipping fresh mint for tea, rosemary for dinner, or something green and fragrant for whatever is simmering on the stove.
Forget the second dishwasher. We want the greenhouse.
STYLE
The Late ’90s Look, Right on Time
The clothes are having a second life too.
Slip dresses, fitted cardigans, long skirts, soft knits, tanks, boots, and easy layers make the film look surprisingly current. Sally’s wardrobe is quieter and more grounded; Gillian’s is sexier, looser, and a little more theatrical.
Together, they capture the best of late-’90s dressing: feminine, unfussy, and far less interested in looking perfectly “styled.”
A bias-cut skirt, a fitted cardigan, a great pair of boots—and suddenly 1998 looks a lot like 2026.
FOOD
Girl Dinner, Owens Edition
Food in Practical Magic is more about atmosphere than recipes: herbs within reach, something on the stove, tea in the kitchen, women gathered around a table.
Perfect for a Girl Dinner & a Movie.
Make something simple, chop fresh herbs, and pour a midnight margarita—or its mocktail counterpart.
CULTURE
The Women Who Show Up
What matters most is that the women show up.
Sisters, aunts, daughters, friends, neighbors. They don’t always agree but when someone needs help, the circle gets bigger.
In Practical Magic 2, Sally’s daughters are grown. The women who were once being protected are now old enough to do some protecting themselves.
LIVE THE FILM
A Practical Magic Girl Dinner & a Movie
Rewatch the original before Practical Magic 2. Make an easy dinner, bring home a pot of rosemary or mint, use a few leaves for tea, light the candles, and wear something very late-’90s in the best possible way.
Then invite someone you’d actually want in your kitchen.
